The brochure number is 35 minutes. It’s true, on a dry Tuesday at ten in the morning. The resorts themselves say 35 to 45, for a drive of roughly 35 to 38 miles depending on where in town you’re headed. That honest range is one of the best things about living here. It’s also worth knowing what stretches it.

What stretches it
- Parleys Canyon. I-80 climbs to about 7,100 feet at Parleys Summit. In a storm the traction law goes into effect, and one jackknifed truck can close a lane for an hour.
- Construction. The canyon is in a multi-year repaving and bridge project. Nightly lane closures, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., began in May 2026, which matters for late arrivals and early departures.
- Rush hour. Commuters run both directions now. Weekday mornings and late afternoons add time at Kimball Junction and again in the Salt Lake valley.
- The airport itself. The new terminal is long. A tunnel that opened in late 2024 shortened the walk to the far B gates considerably, and the last new gates open at the end of October 2026.
As a rule, allow an extra 15 to 30 minutes in weather or at rush hour, and more in a real storm.
By side of town
Kimball Junction and Jeremy Ranch sit closest to the interstate. Old Town and Deer Valley add the drive in on SR-224. The Jordanelle side, including Deer Valley East Village, comes off US-40.
I live closer to Parleys Canyon, so Salt Lake and the airport feel surprisingly close. If you commute to Salt Lake or travel regularly for work, that’s something I’d factor into your home search from the beginning. Depending on where you live, you could spend an extra 20 to 30 minutes just getting out of town, and that adds up when you’re doing it often. It’s one of those everyday details that can make certain neighborhoods a better fit for your life.
If you aren’t driving
- Shared shuttle. Door to door, usually 40 to 60 minutes with other stops.
- Private car or rideshare. Uber and Lyft both pick up at the airport. For an early morning ride down the canyon, book a car service ahead.
- Public transit. No bus runs directly from the airport. The light rail goes downtown, and High Valley Transit’s 107 runs from Salt Lake to Kimball Junction about every 90 minutes. It’s free, and it suits a patient traveler with one bag.
- Flying private. Heber Valley Airport has no airline service but handles large private jets, and puts the drive to Park City and Deer Valley at about 20 minutes.
The short version: few ski towns sit this close to a major airport. Just don’t schedule the drive like it’s July.
